NOVA Cool Cats ice skating coach DC's own Bruce Porter Jr demonstrates stick handling at Kettler Capitals Iceplex
If you are at Kettler Capitals Iceplex this week you may notice as slightly different crowd of hockey players. The large contingent of young ice hockey players, coaches and proud parents in and around the arena are celebrating big milestones, as their Autistic children learn to skate and play hockey. The NOVA Cool Cats are a non profit organization that uses the game of hockey to help Autistic players develop characteristics that will help them be more successful both inside and outside of hockey.
“This is my fourth year coaching the camp and it is amazing how the boys and girls have progressed” says NOVA Cool Cats ice skating coach Bruce Porter Jr.”There may be something to this that deserves a closer look and more research. The kids are genuinely excited about the sport of hockey and seem to be able to focus dramatically better while on the ice than in other situations.”
You can hear the echo of these words across North America and undoubtedly the world as the numbers of Autistic children continues to grow. As more and more parents of developmentally disabled children find themselves looking for positive outlets, organizations like the NOVA Cool Cats are priceless. Every year the camp is also joined by a group of youth volunteers. These kids are drawn from competitive local ice hockey programs, and they spend their last week before going back to school volunteering their time for a noteworthy cause with the Cool Cats Camp.
NOVA Cool Cats Special Hockey warmup led by volunteer Amanda Brawley
Today at Kettler Capitals Iceplex the Washington Capitals Red Rockers are making a special visit and hopefully the Caps mascot Slapshot who is always a big hit with the kids. In years past NHL Washington Capitals John Erskine has joined the camp on ice and demonstrated slap shots, stick handling and passing; while Mike Knuble made all of the campers day last year with an inspirational photo opp appearance.
I want to raise the awareness about the sport of ice hockey helping developmentally disabled children, especially Autistic children focus and excel like never before. This is a truly amazing, timely, and newsworthy story that deserves a voice. With the sport of ice hockey these kids are learning valuable life lessons and how to interact with with their peers and contemporaries. Come out today and show your support, we take the ice at 11am!
What started as the WikiLeaks Revolution has sparked the spread of change across the Middle East; Social media has empowered oppressed people into revolution. Common people with little access to the World Wide Web because of censored internet connections have still found loopholes with smartphones and social media networks like Twitter, Facebook and Youtube to communicate, mobilize, and force change in long standing governments.
The Internet Black Hole (ThinkBig.com)
In what has become known as the internet black hole the governments of Burma, China, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Vietnam have effectively blocked targeted internet access to information and often shut off access to any internet completely. The government of Iran is actually aggressively planning it’s own Muslum Internet to censor all information accessed within it’s own territory and plans to spread it across the Middle East eventually replacing the World Wide Web. Ali Aghamohammadi, Iran’s head of economic affairs, describes this ”Halal Global Network” this way:
“the new network would at first operate in parallel to the normal Internet — banks, government ministries and large companies would continue to have access to the regular Internet. Eventually, the national network could replace the global Internet in Iran, as well as in other Muslim countries.”
Despite the efforts of these governments to censor information from leaving their borders the people of these countries have paid with their blood to successfully distribute the social media out onto the World Wide Web demanding change. These have been picked up by the major news networks and kept the flame of revolution ignited. By smuggling videos and messages hidden on tiny SIM cards to relatives and news reporters and publishing media via smartphones the people of the Middle East continue to revolt against their oppressive government embracing social networks Twitter, Youtube and Facebook as their weapon of choice. As it turns out it may be the only weapon they have against these repressive regimes.
Google executive Wael Ghonim (itnewsafrica.com)
Egyptian and Google executive Wael Ghonim started a Facebook Fanpage “We are all Khaled Said” in honor of a young man, Khaled Said, who was brutally attacked and eventually killed by policemen. His page, which currently has 125,103 fans, sparked anger not only in Egyptians, but also in people all over the world. Ghonim was able to spread the news of the Egyptian revolution to anyone and everyone and is largely credited with sparking the revolution that toppled the Egyptian government. He also used his Twitter account to tweet up-to-the-minute accounts of what was going on in the streets of Egypt.
By using these social networks people around the world can keep up with exactly what is going on in these countries and they can publically show their support. During the Egyptian revolution, many people on Facebook, worldwide changed their profile picture to the Egyptian flag, showing their support for the people of Egypt. Now we see in Syria the Youtube videos of what the government is doing to it’s own people within it’s borders including the young boy who was brutally tortured and killed by the Syrian Government. With up to the minute information being published on social networks Twitter, Facebook and Youtube by the people themselves many are turning to these social networks to get the news coming out of the Middle East.
While some critics argue that too much credit is being given to social media and not enough is being given to the protesters themselves, I think we can all agree that the revolutions may not have played out the same way if Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube hadn’t been involved.
In a move aimed to connect with the American public as the 2012 election gets underway, President Barack Obama has started a personal social media campaign. Starting on Friday June 17th the Obama camp announced on their website that the President himself will be tweeting from his own Blackberry. He will sign the Tweets with “BO” to signal it is a personal tweet.
The social media savvy President’s 2008 election was largely credited to engaging the under 30 population with a massive Facebook social media Marketing campaign. One of his first acts as President was hiring a Social Networks Manager. His first personal tweet as President came on Sunday as families nationwide celebrated Father’s Day:
“Being a father is sometimes my hardest but always my most rewarding job. Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there. –BO.”
Undoubtedly the decision was influenced by Rep. Weiner’s recent lewd tweets and the overwhelming fact that Twitter is becoming the fastest and most effective way to publish content worldwide. We’ll all be watching to see what he Tweets.
In November of 2010 Emme Porter and Bruce Porter Jr of EmmeGirls LLC and Social Networks Manager™ sat down and did a phone interview with the Networking Fools. Here are some of the video highlights on the topic of social media marketing and search engine optimization from that interview:
Emme Porter & Bruce Porter Jr owners of EmmeGirls LLC and Social Networks Manager™
Bruce Porter Jr: Hi beautiful, what are we doing today?
Emme Porter: Also what Bruce is doing, is buying this virtual real estate on the internet, and using it. So I think he would also like to promote his techniques with SEO and the Social Networks Manager™, which is really where his talent and passion is.
Bruce Porter Jr: ..and how it all integrates. You know we have the reality TV show, and of course we want the reality TV show to be a great hit, but realistically, if what we do it use it to brand our clients then it serves it’s purpose. So we want to use all these different methods of media in order to brand ourselves and our clients. Because keep in mind that the branding and publicity is very important to us, not only for getting new clients, but also getting new models. We have thousands of models on staff and it takes a lot of SEO to get them in here.
Bruce Porter Jr: (speaking about Sports Buzz) ..for companies like them that have an android and Iphone app, marketing companies like us are very attractive. We not only staff the models for you, but we also promote you and get you in there on the first page of Google. If you Google “Sports Buzz Launch Event DC” of course you will see us, and the picture are filed and everything.
Emme Porter: He works tirelessly. How Bruce likes to describe the internet is that it’s alive, and so it’s a constant thing you have to work on all the time because it’s like a living breathing animal.
Bruce Porter Jr: SEO is one of those things that sometimes you’re really not sure why this happened or that happened. You just have to do so many things to get the results that you want. It’s a learning process. You know we’ve made mistakes too. Even a few months ago we made a big mistake and then you realize that is how that works and you have to work overtime to make up lost ground, but it is very effective… To go back to using the models, we take our models that are nationwide and do promotions, that is our business model. Then we use those models to promote ourselves and our clients. That is why when you Google us there are so many results and of course the name of the game is back links.
Emme Porter: Now that we have grown and are national company people use Google or Bing and they search for promotional models or trade show models and whoever is relevant is who the call first.
Bruce Porter Jr: As you know there is a huge difference if you appear on the first page of Google. It didn’t start off that way for us, there are a lot of companies out there who think they have the best promotional modelsor they are the best agency. People have been staffing models for years. It took a while to get there but we are now on the first page of Google for most of our key terms. That keeps the phone ringing and while word of mouth advertising is good, when large corporations hire promotional models, chances are they are going to hop on the internet and Google it, and call the first few people they see.
Social media has greatly changed communication over the past few years. Instead of saying, “Call me!”, a more common phrase these days is “Facebook me!” Likewise, more people are getting their news from the internet rather than the newspaper. In fact Facebook is the information source of choice for the “technology generation”. Even when conducting a search on Facebook you get internet Search results at the bottom of the page as well. So when you decide to sell your house, why not use websites such as Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, and LinkedIn to help reach buyers?
These social networking websites provide a valuable resource to sellers. Through Facebook, you can list your house and promote the listing with Facebook advertising. You can also share the posting with your friends, post pictures, videos, and notes highlighting the positive aspects of your house utilizing viral marketing for your listing.
Sell your house on Twitter
Similarly, on Twitter, you can publish the listing via a tweet informing millions of potential buyers about the price and location of your house with a single click. You can further utilize viral marketing with your Tweets by including some of your favorite and most interesting facts about the house. You can target a specific areas and advertise your open house with times and dates.
LinkedIn is a social network for business professionals that also supports paid advertising. You can list your house on the linkedin advertising network and pay only for the clicks that you receive. You can also post the listing on your Linkedin status, share with your connections and email your linkedin contacts about the listing. If you have your house listed on the MLS directory you can also post that listing to your Linkedin account.
360 Virtual Tour of your House
With Youtube you can actually let interested buyers take a 360 virtual tour of your house. You can highlight the best features of your house increasing the opportunity for a sale. Sharing the Youtube video on all four of these networks will help you appear in Google search results.
These sites can be especially useful when targeting young buyers. As the “technology generation” grows up, more people are turning to their favorite social network to help them find information, including looking for places to live. If your house is listed on the social network that your potential buyers are using, then you widen your advertising reach, and therefore increase your chances of selling your house in a reasonable time frame.

One of the best poker players of all time has announced today that he will not play in this year’s World Series of Poker. Phil Ivey has suit in Las Vegas electronically today against Tiltware, the software and marketing firm for Full Tilt Poker. Full Tilt was one of three online gambling sites including PokerStars and Absolute Poker that were shut down by the FBI in April 2011. Players were not been able to retrieve their funds from the online poker sites during the shutdown. 11 people were indicted on charges they knowingly tricked banks into illegally processing payments for gambling in the crackdown.
Full Tilt and PokerStars have reached agreements to reopen to let their players withdraw their money. PokerStars has reportedly paid it’s players back but the Full Tilt players have not been so lucky.
In a Statement released by Phil Ivey on PhilIvey.com he says:
“For many years, I have been proud to call myself a poker player. This great sport has taken me to places I only imagined going and I have been blessed with much success. It is therefore with deep regret that I believe I am compelled to release the following statement.
I am deeply disappointed and embarrassed that Full Tilt players have not been paid money they are owed. I am equally embarrassed that as a result many players cannot compete in tournaments and have suffered economic harm. I am not playing in the World Series of Poker as I do not believe it is fair that I compete when others cannot. I am doing everything I can to seek a solution to the problem as quickly as possible.
My name and reputation have been dragged through the mud, through the inactivity and indecision of others and on behalf of all poker players I refuse to remain silent any longer. I have electronically filed a lawsuit against Tiltware related to the unsettled player accounts. As I am sure the public can imagine, this was not an easy decision for me.
I wholeheartedly refuse to accept non-action as to repayment of players funds and I am angered that people who have supported me throughout my career have been treated so poorly.
I sincerely hope this statement will ignite those capable of resolving the problems into immediate action and would like to clarify that until a solution is reached that cements the security of all players, both US and International, I will, as I have for the last six weeks, dedicate the entirety of my time and efforts to finding a solution for those who have been wronged by the painfully slow process of repayment.”
A deal between social network giant Facebook and online music streaming service Spotify has just been announced. The two social media platforms will reportedly launch together in the next few weeks.
Spotify with over 10 million users online is excited to break into the US social media market leveraging Facebook’s 206 million US users. Similar to social networking site Last.fm and Pandora Spotify looks to enhance the Facebook integration into a seamless and user experience. Last.fm has long had “Connect with Facebook” feature which allows Facebook users to enjoy their friends playlists.
Spotify is reportedly ecstatic about the deal which will feature a Spotify icon next to a person’s post in the newsfeed.
Clicking on the Spotify icon will install the service on their desktop in the background, and also allow users to play from Spotify’s library of millions of songs through Facebook. The service will include a function that lets Facebook users listen to music simultaneously with their friends over the social network,” reports Forbes‘ Parmy Olson.
The fact that you have to install software that runs on your desktop seems a bit cumbersome. It is nice you will be able to listen to music libraries and songs through Facebook and with friends. Myspace has been allowing people to upload songs on their pages for years. Spotify is paying for their music though and it seems to be more interactive because friends can all listen at the same time. I remains to be seen how much advertising revenue Spotify will bring or if they will start charging more for users to listen. The feeling I get from Facebook is they are still looking for ways to monetize the partnership.
Meeting people and becoming friends isn’t like it used to be. While there are still chance meet ups and introductions by friends, more people are meeting online first. Whether it be for dating, business, or mutual fan bases, social media is connecting people in their home towns and across the world.
Kevin Phelan, Vice President at Gutenberg Communications, says technology has “accelerated” relationships.
Typically, he says, you see someone once a year at a conference, or you’re busy with your own life and don’t keep in touch with acquaintances. But with social media “you can keep a daily pulse of what’s going on. You can sit around the country and watch a game together. Then when you meet them in person, you all come together like you’ve never been apart.”
“I think it’s phenomenal to not lose touch and you’re eliminating the distance gap that a lot of people have,” he added.
Cait Downey of HubSpot agrees saying that online and offline relationships can run parallel. “It’s most magical when both lives overlap,” she said.
Downey says someone may have 1,000 friends on Facebook, and they may not have 1,000 friends in real life, but valuable information is still shared. With online relationships, she says, it’s easier to have conversations without interrupting people’s lives. “Phone calls can take blocks out of a day, but a tweet, text of Facebook message can quickly get a message across.”
Rich Brooks, president of flyte new media, says although this sharing of thoughts and ideas may seem foreign since it’s online rather than in person, it is still a relationship.
Brooks adds, “It’s not a relationship if it’s one-way; that’s called stalking.”
It’s not breaking news that Al Qaeda is using social media management to communicate and influence it’s followers. Officials are now warning that terrorists and criminals are stealing personal information using the death of Osama bin Laden.
With many version of the Osama Virus appearing including on Facebook be careful of unsolicited emails that include attachments like videos and photos involving the worlds most infamous terrorist. The US Government has decided not to release the photos of the dead terrorist citing safety of the troops and as far as I can tell their have been no leaks of the actual photos.
The content in these malicious emails could include cyber attacks from shutting down your computer to stealing things stored on a computer, like Social Security numbers, credit card and bank numbers, and usernames and passwords.
Don’t become a victim of these terrorist Cyber Attacks. Fraudulent messages often include misspellings, poor grammar and nonstandard English. Use virus protection software that updates daily and say never to agree to download software to view videos.
